Curriculum Rationale: Life Programmes

Intent

The newly designed Life Programme aims to ensure that students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is promoted, that students are fully prepared to undertake an active citizenship in modern Britain and that students gain an understanding of the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

The new curriculum includes Religious Education, Citizenship, and PSHE. The curriculum also covers Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education as this is now statutory.

The new curriculum is delivered in one hour lessons per week to all students in Years 7-11. Outside agencies and visiting speakers support academy staff with delivery to ensure subject content is accurate and resources are of high quality. 

Although PSHE is taught through discreet lessons, it also underpins all activities, assemblies, educational visits and extra-curricular clubs. It is intended that we will offer a cohesive whole-school approach which enables our students to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society.

Key Stage 3

The Key Stage 3 Life Programme aims to provide students with an understanding of a wide range of world religions and Life issues. Students are encouraged to respectfully express their own views and beliefs and share personal experiences whilst acquiring knowledge. Students also learn about key aspects of life.

Key Stage 4

The Key Stage 4 Life Programme aims to provide students with an understanding of the scientific and religious arguments life issues such as extremism, euthanasia, poverty and life after death. Students are encouraged to respectfully express their own views and beliefs and share personal experiences whilst acquiring knowledge.

Queensbury Academy believes that a strong PSHE education is important to help our pupils develop into well-rounded members of society, who can make a positive contribution to their community. Our PSHE curriculum is strongly tied to our RSE, relationships, health education and pastoral care programme.

•          Parents will be informed about the policy via the school’s website where it, and the PSHE curriculum, will be available to read and download.

We follow a programme of study developed from the PSHE Association’s Secondary Scheme of Work Planning Toolkit, which is recommended by the Department for Education.  Our programme of Study not only reflects the specific needs of the pupils but also reflects the universal needs shared by all pupils.

The Life Programme has also been planned by following the guidelines of the Bradford Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education, and Citizenship programmes of study, and the Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education Policy.

PSHE education gives pupils the knowledge, skills, and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe and to prepare them for life and work in modern Britain. Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is a school subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. These skills and attributes help pupils to stay healthy, safe and prepare them for life and work in modern Britain. When taught well, PSHE education helps pupils to achieve their academic potential, and leave school equipped with skills they will need throughout later life.

PSHE education helps pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. From making responsible decisions about alcohol to succeeding in their first job, PSHE education helps pupils to manage many of the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up.

To embrace the challenges of creating a happy and successful adult life, pupils need knowledge that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy. Pupils can also put this knowledge into practice as they develop the capacity to make sound decisions when facing risks, challenges and complex contexts. Everyone faces difficult situations in their lives. These subjects can support young people to develop resilience, to know how and when to ask for help, and to know where to access support. High quality, evidence-based and age-appropriate teaching of these subjects can help prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.  They can also enable schools to promote the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, at school and in society.

Our program will offer a holistic PSHE learning journey spanning the pupils’ high school career, with a progressive, spiral curriculum that addresses real needs in a rapidly changing world. This program will use a mindful approach to PSHE, bringing together Personal, Social, Health Education, emotional literacy, social skills, mental health and resilience development in a comprehensive scheme of learning. Teaching strategies are varied and are mindful of preferred learning styles and the need for differentiation.

Implementation

We teach Life Programmes in a variety of ways:

Ø  A variety of clubs

Ø  Assemblies

Ø  School events

We include the five British Values (democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths/beliefs) within all of our teachings to establish an effective and safe school environment.

The scheme of work has three core themes, the same for each key stage:

Ø  Core Theme 1: Health and Wellbeing

Ø  Core Theme 2: Relationships

Ø  Core Theme 3: Living in the Wider World

Impact

Students are starting to demonstrate a healthy outlook towards school and this is evident in the improvement in behaviour and attitude to learning.

Teachers assess pupil’s progress using the PSHE Association guidelines and pupil voice is used to measure student’s understanding, views and impact.

Floor books for each term, show student understanding in topics, themes and events.
