Here at Queensbury Academy we are using knowledge organisers to help us and you make a difference to your learning and achievement.
Why use knowledge organisers?
Research has shown that we forget almost 80% of what we learn within a week of learning it. However, if we revisit that information the 'forgetting curve' decreases and we start to remember and be able to recall more. The more we retrieve information from our 'long-term' memory back into our 'working memory' the more likely we will be able to remember it when we really need to.
The Forgetting Curve
The diagram below shows how quickly we forget information. The curve is very steep. However, if we revisit information the curve becomes less steep showing we forget less if we keep going back to information we have learnt.
How do I use my knowledge organisers?
How memory works is not a big mystery. We can remember the ideas and information that we turn our attention to often and we quickly forget the ideas and information that we “touch” only once or twice.
The best way to help yourself remember information is to revisit it often. You can quiz each other or ask you mum and dad to quiz you. Even reading through your knowledge organiser and developing questions to test yourself is revisiting! You could also try these suggestions;-
· Self quiz
· Describe a topic out loud to yourself or someone at home.
· Mind mapping
· Make flash cards
· Summarise
· Make a revision clock
